CRISTALLERIE-MOSELLE

The wheel crystal engraving is a very ancient technique, inspired by the work of the fine stone engravers which was carried out using shaping tools of varying size and composition, that are today mounted on an electric wheel. The glass is scored by a combination of the action of the wheel and the use of an abrasive powder and is regularly moistened with water or sometimes oil.

Diamond point engraving : direct engraving is carried out using a diamond point. The diamond point comes in the form of a metal stylus at the end of which is fixed a diamond chip. The technique employed is similar to that of dry point metal engraving. The Lalique signature is engraved using this technique.

♦ CRYSTAL HISTORY :

The cristalliers, as the glassworkers , were first established in forested areas that provided the wood to heat melting furnaces and even the ashes which supplied potassium. In these remote areas , the royal privilege allowed them to wear the sword to defend himself , hence the name ” glass nobility” mocked by the blood of the true nobility . In France, the story of the crystal begins in Lorraine with the glass factory of Münzthal based in 1586, but it is only in 1767 when king Louis XVI confers him by obvious letter the title of “royal Glass factory of Saint-Louis” and in 1782 François de Beaufort finalizes the formula of the crystal with more than 35 % of lead.
