ADDITIONNAL INFORMATIONS
Discover the christmas crystal Santa Claus handcrafted in France.
The story of Santa Claus has its origins in various traditions, notably that of Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop in Asia Minor, known for his generosity towards the poor. In many European countries, Saint Nicholas still dominates the December festivities today. His story has been mixed with pagan elements, such as the celebrations of the winter solstice, to gradually form the character of Santa Claus as we know it.
We must not forget the influence of Norse mythology. Odin, the main god, was often depicted as an old bearded man, dressed in a cape, riding through the sky during the period of Yule, a festival celebrated during the winter solstice. This visual has undoubtedly contributed to shaping the image of Santa Claus.
Crossing the Atlantic, this character became Americanized to become “Santa Claus,” an Anglicized version of “Sinterklaas,” the name given to Saint Nicholas in Dutch. It is mainly thanks to literary writings and advertising campaigns in the 19th and 20th centuries that Santa Claus acquired his contemporary attributes: a red costume, a white beard, and a sleigh pulled by reindeer.
In the French context, and more specifically in Lorraine, Santa Claus shares the stage with Saint Nicholas, especially during the celebrations on December 6th. The legend of Saint Nicholas is particularly alive in this region, and his procession, accompanied by Père Fouettard, is a much-anticipated event.
The story of Santa Claus is therefore a rich and complex fabric of cultures, beliefs, and traditions. Like a canvas by Marc Chagall, where each color, each shape, each symbol has its own meaning but contributes to creating a harmonious and touching work of art, the legend of Santa Claus is a fusion of various elements that resonate in each of us, regardless of our origins.
