♦ BACCARAT :
In 1839, Baccarat began producing colored pieces using techniques which had long fallen into disuse in France. The arrival, in 1841, of an extraordinary engineer, François Eugène de Fontenay, Deputy Factory Manager, and later Manager, brought about great changes. He perfected the manufacture of the famous “Pâte de riz” glass and agate glass today known as opal glass. He also started developing millefiori paperweights in 1846.
The first Universal Exposition held in 1855 in Paris provided the opportunity for Baccarat to acquire its international reputation for perfection which is still true today. In addition to the prestigious pieces which received the highest at major exhibits and fairs, Baccarat created and manufactured stemware of such exceptional quality that kings, heads of state and embassies procured their glassware exclusively from Baccarat.
The XXth century is marked by Baccarat’s collaboration with the most celebrated perfume makers : City, Guerlain … and the great houses of fashion : Schiaparelli, Dior … The influence of the decorator Georges Chevalier on Baccarat’s designs from the 1920’s to the 30’s gave them a modern look typical of the Art Deco period. Other artists and designers have continued to create pieces that are contemporary in design while respecting Baccarat’s timeless look which is born of craftsmanship and perfection.
